Anti-aging Nonsurgical Treatments

Time cannot be stopped or slowed down but its effects such as the aging process can be slowed down while improving the skin’s texture, tone and tautness resulting in more youthful looking skin without going under the knife, thanks to anti-aging nonsurgical treatments. Nonsurgical aesthetic procedures are quickly becoming the go-to anti-aging treatments of choice over traditional surgical options for addressing skin rejuvenation.

Why would one need to slow down the clock?

Skin starts to age while you are in your twenties and it’s a natural process known as intrinsic aging. The aging process is mainly controlled by our genes and it shows up in form of:

  • Visible lines on our face such as wrinkles and fine lines
  • Loss of youthful fullness
  • Thinner drier skin

There is also extrinsic aging which is influenced by the environment and lifestyle choices. This can add to skin aging prematurely by showing signs such as:

  • Wrinkles
  • Age spots
  • Sunspots
  • Scars
  • Skin discoloration

Reasons to look younger are many, ranging from enhancing self-esteem, climbing the career ladder, social reasons to just plainly wanting to look younger. Anti-aging non-surgical treatments help to reverse or delay these signs and help you look younger, and even healthier in the process.

Anti-ageing treatments

Although surgical procedures remain in high demand, non-surgical and minimally invasive anti-aging treatment options deliver results with little or no downtime and are more accessible to both men and women. Here are some of the treatments that can help you in achieving younger looking skin:

·  Injectables

Anti-aging injectables are FDA-approved treatments for relaxing facial wrinkles and folds (such as crow’s feet and smile lines), contour the body (reducing double chin) and improve signs of facial fat loss by creating framework, structure and restoring volume to the face and lips. During injectables’ procedures local anesthesia may be given, or the treatment area is first numbed with ice. Injectables are mostly lunch-hour procedures with little to no discomfort. The results are immediate with little to no downtime. Injectable treatments include:

  1. Neurotoxins: These are the single most popular injectable cosmetic procedure currently. They are commonly used to smooth frown lines between the eyebrows, wrinkles around the eyes, forehead creases and other areas of facial expression. Neurotoxins are injected to relax wrinkle-producing muscles to help smooth the appearance of moderate to severe lines. The results typically last for three to four months.

The current neurotoxins in the market are Botox Cosmetic, Xeomin, Dysport and Jeuveau. Botox is a purified protein that is derived from botulinum toxin. It is the best known and has been the number one selling anti-aging treatment of its kind. However, each of these neurotoxins has its own distinctive benefit in keeping aging at bay.

  • Dermal fillers: With aging comes the natural loss of skin’s collagen, hyaluronic acid and elasticity resulting in wrinkles and loss of fullness in the face especially around the eyes, cheeks, mouth and jawline. Injectable dermal fillers are temporary anti-aging treatments that can enhance shallow contours, soften facial creases, plump thin lips, diminish wrinkles and improve the appearance of recessed scars. Injecting soft-tissue dermal fillers gives natural looking and long-lasting results with ongoing treatments. Examples of these popular non-surgical options include Juvéderm, Radiesse, Restylane, Revanesse and Belotero. Dermal fillers are also a great option as an anti-aging treatment for younger looking hands. How long the results last depends on which type of dermal filler used and the treatment area.
  • Collagen stimulators: Once you reach your twenties, the body’s natural ‘scaffolding’ known as collagen, starts to decrease in production mainly due to stress, sun damage and environmental factors. Sculptra is a collagen stimulator that helps in stimulating the body’s own natural collagen production to help in restoring the skin’s inner structure. This treatment increases lost facial volume and the results can last up to two years.
  • Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP): This technique uses the body’s own plasma in anti-aging treatments. Plasma is the liquid portion of the whole blood and platelets are blood cells that cause the blood to clot and other growth healing functions. PRP is applied topically with treatments such as microneedling (also known as the vampire facial) or it can be injected into the tissue (vampire facelift). This treatment rejuvenates the skin by promoting elastin and collagen growth to make the skin smoother and tighter.
  • Fat reduction: Injectables are also used to reduce fat in the submental area and the dreaded double chin. The brand name Kybella is a fat reduction injectable that uses a synthetic form of bile acid, deoxycholic acid (which is produced naturally by the body), to destroy fat cells specifically beneath the chin area which are metabolized by the body over the following weeks. This treatment can change your profile and improve the shape and contour of your jawline.

· Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing

This anti-aging treatment can be effective in reducing pigmentation issues on the face, neck, chest, hands and arms and softening wrinkles too. During this treatment, a fractional laser delivers precise microbeams of laser light into the lower layers of the skin thus creating narrow but deep columns of tissue coagulation, in the process stimulating natural healing and the growth of healthy new tissue.

· Microneedling

Microneedling is an anti-aging treatment, collagen-inducing therapy used to improve the skin texture, reduce the appearance of fine lines, sun damage, acne scarring and enlarged pores. It works by creating micro-channels through using tiny needles that are set to penetrate different depths of the top skin layer, allowing skincare products and serums to treat the skin. This minimally invasive procedure uses Radio Frequency (RF) energy that is transmitted through the needles to heat the deeper tissues and it is mostly used on the face, neck and chest resulting in new skin cell development that reveals healthier glowing skin. The benefits take a bit of time to be seen because the collagen build as the skin heals.

· Chemical peels

Chemical peels improve the appearance of aging skin by exfoliating the outer layer of skin using a chemical solution. These solutions are typically used on the face, neck and hands. A peel treats fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth, facial wrinkles, mild scarring, age spots, sun damage and overall tone and texture of the skin resulting in new skin that is substantially smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin. Chemical peels generally fall under three categories:

  1. Superficial or lunchtime peel: These are mild acid peels such as alpha-hydroxy acid which penetrate the outer layer of the skin and exfoliates to improve rough skin or discoloration on the hands, chest, neck and face. Superficial peels are a great choice for individuals looking for mild correction and skincare maintenance or for first timers of chemical peel services.
  2. Medium peel: Medium chemical peels use glycolic or trichloroacetic acid to penetrate the outer and middle layers of the skin. It gets rid of damaged skin cells thus improving on age spots, fine lines and wrinkles, freckles and moderate skin discoloration or rough skin.
  3. Deep peels: Deep peels use phenol acid or trichloroacetic acid to deeply penetrate the middle layer of the skin. In the process it removes damaged skin cells to diminish age spots, moderate lines, freckles and shallow scars. This facial procedure can only be performed once, but it provides a dramatic improvement in skin appearance.

The deeper the peel, the longer the recovery due to increased skin sensitivity, inflammation, redness, skin peeling and healing.

·  Skin tightening – Non-surgical facelift

Ultherapy is the only FDA-approved technology designed to lift the face and neck and décolleté with no downtime. It can treat the sagging lower face and neck, brow furrows and crepey lines across your chest. Ultrasound technology targets the same muscle a surgeon would manipulate in a facelift which is the much deeper superficial, musculoaponeurotic system SMAS. This anti-aging treatment also has the ability to visualize beneath the skin’s surface and target precise delivery at the right depth for each patient. It works by delivering energy (heat) into the skin to stimulate collagen and elastin production which tightens the skin. The optimal results can be visible within three to six months after the treatment can continue for a year.
