Cosmetic Injectables

Our skin begins to lose elasticity and firmness as we grow older and it also produces less collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. Aging also coincides with the loss of volume in the lips and face. Cosmetic injectables are safe and highly effective treatments which can help to improve or diminish some of the visible signs of aging and restore a softer, more youthful appearance. Botox and Dermal fillers are two of the most popular cosmetic injectables. They are minimally invasive hence no surgery is involved.

Botox contains purified bacteria that temporarily freezes muscles. In doing so, it can help in minimizing excessive sweating and the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines caused by facial expressions.

Dermal fillers contain ingredients such as hyaluronic acid which add fullness to areas that have thinned mostly due to aging. Usually the thinning is common in the lips, cheeks and around the mouth.

Why one would need cosmetic injectables?

Botox only works on wrinkles dynamic wrinkles – wrinkles caused by muscle movement – which are often called expression lines. The dynamic wrinkles that can be treated with Botox are lines on the upper face, such as:

  • The horizontal lines on the forehead
  • The ‘11’ between the brows
  • Crow’s feet around the eyes

These lines are caused by facial expression such as smiling, frowning and squinting among others. It is however important to note that Botox does not work on wrinkles and fine lines caused by sagging or loss of plumpness in the face otherwise known as static wrinkles. Static wrinkles include lines in the neck, cheeks and jowl areas.

There are different types of dermal fillers which are designed to treat varying signs of aging such as:

  • Fill in or enhance shallow areas on the face
  • Plump up thinning lips
  • Remove or decrease the wrinkles or shadow under the eye caused by the lower eyelid
  • Soften or fill in the look of recessed scars
  • Fill in or soften static winkles especially on the lower face

The Treatment

Cosmetic injectables treatments are usually done by a qualified experienced medical practitioner. The procedure typically takes about 30 minutes or less for Botox and 30-60 minutes for dermal fillers depending on the treatment area.

Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin obtained from bacteria. Tiny regulated amounts of Botox can be used to temporarily correct wrinkles and excess sweating (hyperhidrosis). Botox works by blocking nerve signals in the muscles where it is injected, temporarily paralyzing them thus reducing their movement. This can lead to less or no sweating in cases of hyperhidrosis and wrinkles being softened, reduced or even removed.

Dermal fillers, also known as soft tissue fillers, are substances designed to be injected beneath the surface of the skin to add fullness and volume. There are different types of dermal fillers, each is designed to treat different signs of aging and other cosmetic issues.

Botox and dermal fillers can be used alongside each other, but this depends on the area being treated. You may be advised to wait for about two weeks to see the Botox results before dermal fillers are administered in the same area.

Regular treatments are needed to maintain the results.

The Recovery

When it comes to cosmetic injectables (Botox & Fillers), there is usually no downtime. You might feel sore for a couple of hours but that goes away after a while. Botox results can take up to a week to be seen while filler results are immediate.
