Lip Augmentation
Youthful, plump lips are one of those things that never go out of style. But aging can leave them looking lined and thin. However, opting for a Lip Augmentation procedure can restore or add volume to the lips and smooth vertical lines around the mouth and lips.
Although there are a number of techniques that can be used in lip augmentation, which include surgical procedures such as lip implants, cosmetic surgeons and non-surgical aesthetic specialists are nowadays more inclined towards the minimally invasive treatments to achieve a natural look.
Why would one need a lip augmentation procedure?
If you have thin, lined or asymmetrical lips and you are not feeling comfortable with them, lip augmentation can help address this issue and can make you feel more confident in your smile.
The Treatment
A variety of approaches can be used to help patients improve their lip appearance. They range from temporary filler injections to lip implant surgery. It is advisable to start with a temporary treatment then you can later progress to a longer-lasting treatment if needed. The treatment options for lip augmentation include:
- Dermal fillers
- Fat injections
- Lip implants
Dermal fillers: Dermal fillers such as Juvéderm and Restylane which contain hyaluronic acid are a popular non-surgical option which offer temporary lip enhancement. They should be administered by a licensed and experienced provider at a cosmetic surgery clinic. The treatment only takes about 15 to 30 minutes and it is done as an outpatient procedure. A topical numbing agent is first applied on the lips and sometimes, nerve block injections can be given prior to the treatment to completely numb the lips. The areas where the injections will be made are marked and needles are then used to inject the dermal filler into the lips. Ice may be given to ease discomfort and control swelling following the treatment.
Fat injections: Fat grafting or autologous fat injections use fat from another part of your body as a lip filler. The procedure involves liposuction surgery on a different area of your body. This procedure should only be performed by a qualified cosmetic surgeon who has specialized training in fat transfer procedures. The procedure is usually done on an outpatient basis. Just like dermal fillers, a topical agent is first applied on the lips to numb them and then markings are made on the areas to be injected. The harvested fat is then injected into the lips. Ice is also given in this case to ease discomfort. Since some of the injected fat may not survive in its new location, additional treatment may be needed to achieve the desired result.
Lip implants: This procedure can achieve a semi-permanent lip enhancement for those who desire a more lasting solution with minimal maintenance. Implants are made from biodegradable substance or a soft, pliable silicone rubber. The surgery is usually performed by an experienced surgeon using local anesthesia. The implants are inserted through tiny incisions hidden in the corners of the mouth. The lip implant surgery can take less than 30 minutes to perform and the scars left behind are virtually undetectable.
The Recovery
Dermal fillers: Little to no downtime is needed for dermal filler treatments and you can resume your normal activities immediately after. There might be some bruising and swelling but they resolve quickly.
Fat injections: The recovery period will last several days depending on the extent of liposuction, after which the patient will have noticeably fuller and plumper appearance of the lips. There might be some bruising and swelling but these fade away during the recovery.
Lip implants: The downtime is usually between 1 to 3 days with some bruising and swelling which fade away revealing a noticeable increase in lip volume.
Who is a Candidate for lips augmentation?
The ideal candidate for Lip Augmentation is someone who is generally healthy, has realistic expectations and has naturally thin lips.
The Results of the treatment
Dermal fillers: The results are noticeable immediately after the treatment and can last between 4 to 12 months. Regular treatments are needed to maintain the results. To achieve beautiful natural results, a provider with immense skill and experience is required.
Fat injections: The fat will feel and look natural in the lips and the results can last for many years. Once the final results are achieved, there is no need to repeat the treatment.
Lip implants: This results in more plump, fuller lips that can last for many years. If you are not satisfied with the results, the lip implants can always be removed through surgery.
